Anna's Hummingbird

Calypte anna

About

Anna's Hummingbird is a dazzling gem of the Pacific Coast, with the male displaying an iridescent magenta-rose gorget and crown that blazes like a living jewel in sunlight. These tiny birds — weighing about 4 grams, less than a nickel — possess extraordinary aerial abilities, hovering in place and flying backwards with ease. Their wings beat up to 80 times per second, creating the characteristic humming sound.
